Sprostać jednej z najlepszych płyt dekady

Na następcy „American Idiot” ciążyło ciężkie brzemię – wszyscy spodziewali się po nim co najmniej tego samego poziomu co na poprzedniej płycie. Dodatkowo zespół zmienił producenta na Buga Vitcha, producenta słynnego „Nevermind” Nirvany. Czym zaowocowała taka współpraca? Kolejnym koncept albumem, tym razem podzielonym na 3 akty i rozpoczynającą się pieśnią pochwalną stulecia. Album wprawdzie nie ma wyraźnie zarysowanej fabuły, ale ma pewien koncept.

Akt I: Heroes and Cones

O czym mówi pierwszy akt? Przede wszystkim jest swego rodzaju wprowadzeniem. Poznajemy w nim dwójkę bohaterów: Glorię („¡Viva La Gloria!”) i Christiana („Christian’s Inferno”). Oba imiona są swego rodzaju grą słowną. „Gloria” w języku angielskim oznacza chwałę, podczas gdy „christian” – chrześcijański.

Dobrze, to tak jak na języku polskim, mamy bohaterów, potrzebujemy jeszcze określić czas akcji. Na pewno jest to XXI wiek. Skąd to wiemy? Z tytułowego utworu. „21st Centurry Brakdown” zawiera wiele alegorii i jest poniekąd autobiografią Billie’ego. Skąd to wiemy? Mamy tu odniesienia do czasu narodzin Billie’ego, ukończenia szkoły przez jego syna Joey’a a także do jego rodzinnej Kalifornii.

Skończmy może z tonem przypominającym notatki z zeszytu od języka polskiego. Co jeszcze dostajemy w tym akcie? Buntownicze „Know Your Enemy”, które zostało wybrane na pierwszy singiel, psychodeliczne „Before the Lobotomy” pełne patosu i metafor a także utwór zadedykowany żonie Billie’ego, czyli „Last Nigt On Earth”. W piosence tej powtarza się często zwrot „Sending all my love to you”, którym to, jak głoszą legendy ludowe, Billie kończy każdą wiadomość sms do żony.

Akt II: Charlatanes and Saints

Poprzedni akt zakończył się słodko, ale teraz już tak nie będzie. II akt otwiera piosenka traktująca o niczym innym jak o kryzysie wiary. Co ciekawe, w intro do „East Jesus Nowhere” można usłyszeć ówczesną dziewczynę Tre’a – Ruri. O ile wierzyć legendom ludowum, z Coolem związana jest jeszcze jedna piosenka – „Peacemaker”. Podobno Billie pokłócił się z Mike’iem, tudzież Mike z Billie’iem, a Tre ich pogodził… No cóż, urban legend to urban legend. Omawiając ten utwór trzeba koniecznie zwrócić uwagę na smyczki, które można w nim usłyszeć.

Zostańmy jeszcze na moment przy tematach osobistych. W 2009 roku, kiedy ukazała się płyta, nikt nie przypuszczał, że „Restless Heart Syndrome” jest piosenką dotyczącą problemów z nałogami Billie’ego. Nadaje to zupełnie inny ton wypowiedzią Armstronga dotyczących pracy nad tym utworem, która to podobno nie należała do najłatwiejszych.

Czytając mój wywód pewnie zastanawiacie się, czy ten akt zawiera jakieś piosenki niezwiązane z życiem zespołu. Owszem, zawiera. Wróćmy na chwilę do Glorii, o której głoszą dwie piosenki – „Last of the American Girls” i „¿Viva la Glora?”. Dowiadujemy się z nich, że Gloria jest przykładną buntowniczką, która jednak nie zawsze jest taka „bojowa” jaka wydaje się na zewnątrz („Little girl, little girl, why are you crying?” – przyp. Watson).

Warto zwrócić uwagę, że przy tworzeniu „21st Century Breakdown” zespół ponownie wykorzystał łączenie się piosenek. Tym razem wspomniane powyżej „Last of the American Girls” przechodzi w „Murder City”. Jest to bardzo energiczny utwór, który opisuje sytuację w Oakland podczas zamieszek z 2008 roku.

Akt III: Horseshoes and Handgrenades

„American Idiot” było pełne przekleństw, jednak „21st Century Breakdown” takie nie jest. Dopiero w tytułowej piosence III aktu (oraz pierwszej na nim) możemy usłyszeć wulgaryzmy. Utwór aż kipi złością. Jej powodów można się doszukiwać chociażby w „Static Age”, piosence dotyczącej głównie zepsucia mediów oraz społeczeństwa.

Green Day nie byłby sobą, gdyby nie poruszał tematów dręczących większość społeczeństwa amerykańskiego. Nie obyło się więc bez poruszenia kwestii kryzysu subprime (kryzys ekonomiczny, który zaczął się w Stanach Zjednoczonych który zaczął się w 2008 roku  – przyp. Watsown) jak i ogólnej sytuacji w USA. Przejdźmy zatem do piosenki numer 17, czyli „American Eulogy”. Utwór ten, na wzór „Jesus of Suburbia” i „Homecoming” jest podzielona na 2 części: „Mass Histeria” i „Modern World”. Co ciekawe ostatnią część utworu śpiewa Mike.

Przekleństwa, zepsucie, kryzys…Nie, to nie koniec. W ostatnim akcie dostajemy także „21 Guns”. Piosenkę, którą niektórym fanom „zniszczyły” stacje radiowe. Wprawdzie jest to radiowa, chwytliwa ballada, jednak warto zwrócić uwagę, że piosenka ta dotyczy w pewien sposób kryzysu wartości i utraty nadziei.

Zrobiło się smutno, ciężko i mamy ścianę płaczu jak po upadku Lehman Brothers (ściana płaczu – gwałtowne, nieprzewidziane i duże spadki na giełdzie – przyp. Watson)… No cóż, Green Day nie jest My Chemical Romance więc płyta ma zakończenie optymistyczne w postaci utworu pt. „See the Light”.

Kamery, czarna grzywka i najsłynniejszy pocałunek historii

Album “21st Century Breakdown” promowało 5 singlii. Pierwszy z nich, to “Know Your Enemy”, który to doczekał się dość monotonnego teledysku. Zespół stoi i gra, w tle pojawiają się ognie (zaleciało Rammsteinem), a wszystko to montaż z ujęć nagranych za pomocą kamer poustawianych pod różnymi kontami. Drugim singlem stał się utwór „21 Guns”. Jedni go kochają, drudzy nienawidzą. Prawdą jest, że latem 2009 roku był wybitnie „katowany” przez polskie stacje radiowe, niemniej jednak przyniósł zespołowi rozgłos. Podobnie było z teledyskiem do piosenki. Przedstawiał on Christiana i Glorię ukrywającymi się przed policją po napadzie na bank. Co ciekawe był to trzeci teledysk Green Day’a z udziałem Jasona White’a. Trzeci singiel, to jest „East Jesus Nowhere” przyniósł  teledysk koncertowy, jednak piosenka doczekała się fanowskiego fanvidu prezentującego się znacznie lepiej niż oryginał.

Samo narzekanie? Nie do końca. Teledysk do czwartego singla, czyli „21st Century Breakdown” jest często uznawany za najlepszy teledysk w karierze zespołu. Historia przedstawiona w teledysku jest zobrazowana za pomocą czarno-białych animacji, przypominających graffiti. W teledysku można było znaleźć wiele nawiązań do historii oraz popkultury, takich jak pocałunek Breżniewa z Honeckerem.

Na ostatni singiel wybrano „Last of the American Girls”. Okraszono go też teledyskiem, w którym nie zabrakło Jasona White’a. Opowiada on o „typowym” dniu Glorii.

Grammy w stylu graffiti

Watson nie byłby sobą, gdyby nie omówił aspektów graficznych płyty. Okładka przedstawia Christiana i Glorię, a książeczka przepełniona jest grafikami przypominającymi graffiti.  Co ciekawe, z tyłu książeczki znajduje się… zdjęcie drzwi do studia Jingletown, na których to widnieje podobizna zespołu.

Czemu wspominam o nagrodach w przypadku „21st Century Breakdown”? Ponieważ płyta w 2010 roku dostała Grammy w kategorii „Najlepszy rockowy album” pokonując takie albumy jak „Black Ice” AC/DC czy „No Lines on the Horizon” U2.
